When something like separation happens, you are not facing one crisis.
You are facing three, layered on top of each other and unfolding at the same time.
A few months ago I gave a talk about navigating major life change. I want to write up the central idea here, because a short clip cannot hold all of it.
The idea is this. When something like separation happens, you are not facing one crisis. You are facing three, layered on top of each other and unfolding at the same time.
The first is emotional. Grief, anger, relief, guilt, sometimes all in the same afternoon. The second is practical. Money, housing, parenting schedules, legal paperwork. The third is harder to name. It is the identity layer, the quiet question underneath everything else, who am I now, if this is no longer my story.
Most support addresses one layer at a time, and addresses it well. Therapy is built for the emotional layer. Lawyers and financial advisers are built for the practical layer. The identity layer rarely gets formal support at all. Women are mostly left to work through it alone, usually late at night, usually while also managing the other two layers.
The order in which you address these layers matters more than people expect. You cannot think clearly about a parenting schedule while your nervous system is still in survival mode. You cannot meaningfully redesign your life while you are still grieving the one you expected. Practical clarity becomes available once the emotional layer has settled enough to think straight.
This is the structure The Zest Life is built around. Module One settles the emotional layer first. Module Two moves into the practical layer once there is more capacity to think. Module Three holds the parenting layer, which threads through both. Module Four returns to identity, once there is enough steadiness to ask what comes next, deliberately rather than by default.
None of this happens in a straight line. You will move back and forth between layers, and that is normal. The sequence is a starting shape, not a rule.
If this framework describes something you have been feeling but had not put words to, you are welcome to read more about how the four modules work at thezestlife.co.nz.
